LIONS CONTINUE UNDEFEATED SEASON WITH ANOTHER TWO WINS

The York University Lions field hockey team continued its undefeated season with a pair of victories over the Toronto Varsity Blues and Queen's Gaels at the University of Toronto on Sunday.

Coming off their first win over the three-time defending OUA champion Varsity Blues since 1999 last weekend, the Lions again proved they are the better team this season with a 3-1 victory over their city rivals.

The Lions have pounced on teams early all season and did so again against the Blues, with rookie Madison Mitchell scoring in the second minute of play for an early 1-0 lead. Fellow rookies Frankie St. Louis and Amira Brar added to the score in the second half to lead the Lions to the victory. Toronto's Taylor Fleck scored in the 64th minute to break the shutout, but it was not enough to get her team back into the game.

A few hours later the Lions returned to the pitch and posted another lopsided win, this time by a 4-1 score over the Queen's Gaels.

Fifth-year defender Rebecca Titus opened the scoring in the 16th minute and rookie Jaslan Stirling, the current OUA and U SPORTS female athlete of the week, scored one minute later for a 2-0 lead.

Titus added her second of the day just after halftime, and Montana Merante scored in the 64th minute to round out the scoring for the Lions. Ciara Morrison scored in the 41st minute for the lone goal by the Gaels.

The Lions remain in first place in the OUA standings with an unblemished 7-0 record, 10 points clear of the rest of the field. They will look to continue their winning streak on Wednesday, Oct. 11 when they head to Guelph, Ont., to face the Gryphons in an evening match at 8pm.
