The No. 9 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's soccer team was minutes away from victory but gave up a late goal to the Western Mustangs in a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Â
The two squads always play a tough match against each other and this game was no different, with six yellow cards handed out before there was a goal scored.
Â
The Lions outshot the Mustangs 8-3 in the first half and 8-5 in the second, and Western goalkeeper Kody Thomson had to make three saves in the opening 45 minutes, but the game remained scoreless at the half. The Mustangs did not get a shot on goal in the opening half.
Â
The deadlock was finally broken in the 75
th minute when second-year midfielder
Dylan Carreiro scored his sixth of the season with an assist to
Steve Kloutsouniotis. The Lions appeared to be cruising to the victory when, in the 88
th minute, Braeden Gee put the ball past York goalkeeper
Quillan Roberts to earn a point for his team.
Â
Roberts finished with the one goal allowed and no saves recorded. Thomson had four saves in the match.
Â
The Lions are now unbeaten in eight contests and are part of a three-way tie for first place in the OUA West standings with the McMaster Marauders and Guelph Gryphons at 8-2-1, while the Mustangs sit four points back with a record of 6-2-3.
Â
They will look to continue their unbeaten streak next weekend in a big match-up with the Marauders on Friday night in Hamilton, Ont., at 8pm. The Lions will also head to St. Catharines, Ont., on Sunday to face the Brock Badgers at 3:15pm.
