The York University Lions football team was defeated by a score of 43-27 by the Windsor Lancers in the regular-season finale for both teams at Alumni Field in Windsor, Ont., on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The two teams combined for more than 1400 yards of offence in a game that went up and down the field from start to finish.
Â
The Lions looked like they had scored first, but the touchdown was negated by a penalty and they failed to put any points on the board on their opening drive. Instead, it was the Lancers who opened the scoring on a touchdown by Marvin Gaynor and a field goal by Clark Green on the following possession.
Â
On York's first play after the field goal, quarterback
Brett Hunchak and receiver
Kadeem Hemmings hooked up for a 75-yard touchdown that made the score 10-7. A field goal by rookie kicker
Dante Mastrogiuseppe early in the second quarter tied the game, but on the next drive the Lancers took the lead again by scoring another touchdown and then stayed ahead of the Lions for the remainder of the game.
Â
A 21-yard touchdown run by Hunchak and a field goal by Mastrogiuseppe, as well as 10 more points for the Lancers, brought the score to 27-20 in favour of the home team at the half.
Â
Rounding out the scoring for the Lions in the second half was a 17-yard touchdown catch by
Colton Hunchak, thrown by back-up quarterback
Matt Krason, who played the entire second half, and a single point from Mastrogiuseppe. Hunchak finished the season with six touchdowns in just three games, placing him second in the OUA.
Â
Brett Hunchak finished the first half with 266 passing yards on 17-of-26, and Krason went 19-of-33 for 286 yards.
Â
Gaynor was the top producer on the day with 232 rushing yards on 16 carries, and he also had a six-yard touchdown catch.
Â
Windsor quarterback Sam Girard was 14-of-23 for 285 yards and four touchdown passes to four different receivers.
Â
Both the Lions and Lancers finished the regular season with 1-7 records and outside the playoffs.
