The No. 7 nationally ranked York University Lions men's hockey team travelled downtown to face the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday and extended their winning streak to five after defeating the Blues 4-1.
Â
This was a similar outcome to the pre-season match-up between the two teams, where the Lions won 5-1.
Â
The first period was scoreless for both teams, and the game remained that way until the sixth minute of the play in the second period. That was when York's
Reid Jackman – assisted by
Nik Coric and
Derek Sheppard – scored on a power play. The score at the end of the period was 1-0 for the Lions.
Â
The third period was filled with excitement. Jackman scored again for the Lions. Then, the Varsity Blues took control of the puck and Louis Kereakou was able to add a goal for the Varsity Blues.
Â
The Lions were able to regain control of the rink and added two more goals, from
Alex Mowbray on an empty net and
Derek Sheppard on a power play, respectively. Assists for the Lions in the third period came from Mowbray,
Trevor Petersen, and two from team captain
Shayne Rover. The third period finished with the Lions ahead of the Varsity Blues 4-1.
Â
The Lions are now 5-0-0 for the regular season. They will be back at Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday, Oct. 28 to take on the Ryerson Rams. Puck drop is at 7pm.
