LIONS DEFEATED BY RAMS IN STRAIGHT SETS IN HOME OPENER

The York University Lions women's volleyball team hit the Tait McKenzie Centre court in their home-opening match Friday night and lost in straight sets to the undefeated Ryerson Rams.

The match followed an amazing weekend for the Lions, when they defeated both the RMC Paladins and Queen's Gaels, and ended their mini two-game winning streak.

The Lions got off to a slow start and the Rams were able to quickly accumulate points on their side of the scoreboard. However, the Lions were able to make some fantastic offensive and defensive plays, which allowed them to make their way up the scoreboard while slowing the Rams' progress. The set finished with 25-16 for the visiting Rams.

The Lions ramped up the intensity in the second set but it wasn't enough to keep the Rams off the top of the scoreboard. This set finished with the Rams winning 25-19 – a closer score than was seen in the first set.

The Lions continued to play with more aggression throughout the third. The two teams ended up tied at the sixth point, and the Lions were able to keep the score close for the next few points. The Rams began to pull away a few points later, and the Lions soon found themselves trailing again 15-10. The Rams continued to extend their lead to the end of the set, claiming the third with a score of 25-15.

Leading the Lions in scoring was Kayla Clennon with 12 points, comprised of nine kills and three service aces. Cadence Currie led the team in digs with a whopping 13.

Theanna Vernon led the Rams in points with 13.5 (11 kills, one solo block and 3 assisted bocks). Teammate Cailin Wark followed closely with 12.5 points (nine kills, two service aces and three assisted blocks).

The Lions now have a 2-2 season record. They will take to the Tait McKenzie main gym again Friday, Nov. 17 at 6pm to square off with the Guelph Gryphons. The following evening they will welcome the Waterloo Warriors to home court. Both matches will begin at 6pm.
