The York University Lions men's hockey team travelled to London, Ont., to take on the Western Mustangs Friday and escaped with a 5-4 shootout victory after surrendering a two-goal lead early in the third period.
Â
The Mustangs took an early lead thanks to an unassisted goal by Spenser Cobbold. The rest of the first period remained quiet, but a flurry of activity in the second period led to frequent scoreboard updates.
Â
Trevor Petersen, assisted by
Derek Sheppard, scored the Lions' first goal of the game at the beginning of the second period. 11 minutes later, this was followed by another Lions goal, this time from
Scott Feser. He was assisted by
Josh LaFrance and
Justin Bean.
Â
Only two minutes passed before a third goal was scored for the Lions. It was
Alex Mowbray's turn to slip the puck into the net. He was assisted by teammates
Morgan Messenger and
Stefano Pezzetta.
Â
To wrap up scoring for the second period, the Mustangs regained control of the puck. Robert Polesello scored with the help of Cody Brown. The period ending with the Lions leading 3-2.
Â
Sheppard scored within the first minute of play in the third period with the help of
Colton Vannucci and
Kyle Campbell. After this, the Mustangs quickly scored two more goals 59 seconds apart to tie up the score. These were scored by Cordell James and Mitchell Brooks. The two teams were still tied 4-4 at the end of the third, and a scoreless five-minute overtime forced them to enter a shootout.
Â
Cobbold scored the only goal for the Mustangs. Feser and Sheppard scored for the Lions, and goaltender
Mack Shields stood tall at the other end to secure the victory. Shields stopped 39 of the 43 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, while Western netminder Dan Davies made 35 saves.
Â
The Lions improve to an 8-2 season record and continue to sit atop the OUA West standings. The Mustangs fall to 3-5-1 for the regular season.
Â
The Lions return to home ice Saturday, Nov. 11 to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Puck drop is at 7pm.
