LIONS COME UP SHORT AGAINST NO. 5 MARAUDERS

The York University Lions women's basketball team welcomed the No. 5 nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders in their second home game of the weekend Saturday. Following their exciting win over Brock the night before, the Lions were unable to repeat their stellar performance, and fell to the Marauders 69-51.

The Lions' Khara Keane made the first basket of the game. After that, the Marauders picked up the pace, and the Lions had a difficult time adjusting both their offensive and defensive games. The quarter ended with the Lions trailing the Marauders 19-6.

The Lions worked hard in the second quarter to close the gap, and their efforts paid off. They scored a total of 19 points in this quarter alone, compared to the 11 scored by the Marauders. The Marauders were still leading heading into halftime but only by five points, at 30-25.

The third and fourth quarters remained a tough battle for the Lions, and despite their best efforts they could not keep up with the nationally-ranked squad. The game ended in favour of the Marauders 69-51.

Leading the scoring for the Lions was Lindsey Shotbolt with 17 points, followed by Megan McLeod with 11 points. Shotbolt and Lauren Golding led in rebounds with seven each.

Outstanding performances from the Marauders' squad included Hilary Hanaka, who led the Marauders with 19 points, and Linnaea Harper, who scored the second highest number of points at 16 and led the team in rebounds with five.

The Lions now have a 1-2 season record, and the Marauders improve to 2-1.

The Lions hit the road Wednesday, Nov. 8 to take on the Guelph Gryphons at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre. They will travel to Algoma, Laurier, and Waterloo before they return to the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday, Nov. 24. They will host the Western Mustangs at 6pm.
