The York University Lions men's volleyball team won its second straight five-set thriller on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Queen's Gaels 3-2 on the road in Kingston, Ont.
One day after erasing a two-set deficit in a comeback victory over the Paladins, the Lions jumped out to an early lead by taking the first set 25-21. But the Gaels bounced back in the second, winning easily at 25-15 to level the match at one set apiece.
The match was a thriller after that. The third set went to 31-29 before the Lions were declared the winners after a pair of attack errors by the Gaels. After Queen's took the fourth set 25-22, the fifth set was again a marathon with the Lions pulling it out 20-18. With the set tied at 18-18,
Toure Nwakwesi recorded a kill and then
Logan Mend hit a service ace to seal the victory.
The Lions had six players reach double digits in scoring, led by rookie
Andrew Tauhid's 19 on 16 kills, two blocks and one service ace.
Andrew Shotbolt put up 17 points on 13 kills, three blocks and a service ace, while
Tyler Covach had 16.5 points on 11 kills, three service aces and five assisted blocks.
Mend led all Lions with 50 assists and also added 11 points and seven digs.
While the Lions had a balanced scoring attack, the Gaels saw most of their scoring come from Markus Trence. He finished with 32 points on 27 kills, eight assisted blocks and one service ace and he also chipped in with nine digs.
The Lions remain undefeated on the season at 3-0 and will look to extend that this weekend when they face another perfect team, the 2-0 Ryerson Rams. The match will begin at 8pm at the Tait McKenzie Centre and will be the first of six straight at home for the Lions.
