The York University Lions men's basketball team travelled to the Guelph Gryphon's Athletic Centre to take on the Gryphons Wednesday. The Gryphons proved to be a challenging team as the Lions fell to the Gryphons 87-72.

Deshawn Montaque made the first basket of the game, kick-starting scoring for the Lions and giving the team an early though short-lived lead. From there, the score went back and forth between the Gryphons having a sizeable lead to the Lions being only a point or two behind. The first quarter wrapped up with the Gryphons leading 20-15.

The second and third quarters followed the same trend established in the first with the Lions constantly racing to catch up. The Gryphons were able to extend their lead to 38-33 at the end of the second quarter, and then extend it further to 60-47 at the end of the third.

The Lions continued to play their hearts out in the fourth quarter, at one point coming within 10 points of the Gryphons. The hard-fought match came to an end with a final score of 87-72 in favour of the Gryphons.

Leading the scoring for the Lions was
Brandon Ramirez with 16 points, followed by
Prince Kamunga,
Chevon Brown and
Josiah Riley with 13, 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Ramirez and Riley also led the team in rebounds with six each.

On the Gryphons side of the house, the scoring was led by Drew Walford with 22 points and Daniel Dooley with 16 points.

The Lions have three more away games before they return to home court. They will face off with the Algoma Thunderbirds in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., on Saturday night and then the Laurier Golden Hawks and Waterloo Warriors Nov. 11 and 12, respectively. When they take to the Tait McKenzie court again, it will be on Friday, Nov. 24 at 8pm against the Western Mustangs.
