The red-hot York University Lions men's volleyball team added to its impressive win streak on Saturday after defeating the Brock Badgers 3-1 in St. Catharines, Ont. The Lions, who have now won five straight, moved into first place in the OUA East Division with the win.
Â
It was not until the third set that the Badgers seemed to put up a fight. In the first two sets the Lions won decisively with scores of 25-16 and then 25-17.
Alex Duncan-Thibault (Scarborough, Ont.), was one of the prime reasons for the Lions' early success, as he locked down and took control of the court with his game-leading 23 kills and 29 points, a total that moved him into the OUA scoring lead. This astounding number accounted for over half of the teams total kills.
Â
Jules Muhawe (Orleans, Ont.) and
Davis Gordon (Markham, Ont.) were responsible for many of the Lions second-chance scoring opportunities as the duo recorded 10 digs each. This effort had the Lions sitting pretty with a 2-0 set lead.
Â
In the third set the Badgers were on the ropes, however, they were not prepared to pack it up just yet. A back and forth battle would be ended when the Badgers took the set by a score of 30-28 to extend the match.
Â
In the fourth the Lions quickly returned to the form that they held in the first two sets.
Andrew Shotbolt (Markham, Ont.) would provide his talent to help push the Lions to victory in the last set, finishing second on the team with 10.5 points in the match. The game came to an end once the score reached 25-19.
Â
With the victory the Lions now hold a 10-3 record and the first overall spot in the OUA East standings. Their next game will take place on Sunday when they take on the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues at the Tait McKenzie Centre beginning at 4pm.
