LIONS SNAP SKID WITH COMEBACK WIN OVER BADGERS

The York University Lions women's volleyball team mounted an impressive comeback after being down two sets to none on Saturday afternoon to the Brock Badgers. As a result of the 3-2 win in St. Catharines, Ont., the Lions successfully snapped a three-game losing streak.

In the opening two sets of the match it seemed that the Lions fate would be sealed and for the third time in four games they would be sent home after being swept. Brock ruled the first two sets in a similar fashion as they took both by a score of 25-22.

With the Lions on the ropes and backed into a corner they finally switched gears and found some momentum. The fiery return to victory was lead by Celeste Witzell (Kitchener, Ont.), Melissa Monkhouse (Guelph, Ont.), Carley Flemmer (Delta, B.C.), Sarah Williams (Oakville, Ont.) and Kirsten Dillon (Surrey, B.C.). This group of talented players worked together set by set to overcome the large deficit.

In the third set the Lions ran the Badgers nearly out of the gym. Flemmer was all over the court keeping the ball alive to give the Lions a second chance to score with her team leading 11 digs. Flemmer's efforts allowed Williams to record some of her 11 kills in the game and give the Lions a 25-12 victory in the third set.

In the fourth the two teams knocked each other around, hitting one-another with kills until Brock sat at a 23-20 advantage. This Badgers lead would not last long once the Lions neutralized it with a few fierce plays, however, as Monkhouse displayed her brilliance with her 11 kills in the game and more impressively her two aces to wrap up the victory in the set. The most competitive set of the match would see the Lions edge out the Badgers by a score of 26-24.

The fifth set of the match would call on the Lions vets to anchor the final leg and return York to victory. Dillon was ready and willing to do just that as she tallied an impressive game leading 44 assists, and her precise passing allowed Witzell to record her team-leading 17 kills. Dillon, who recorded the final point of the match on an ace, would finalize the team's astounding effort as the Lions pulled out the 17-15 win.

After their victory, the Lions now hold a 7-7 record and hold down the final playoff spot in the OUA East Division with 14 points. The Lions' next game will take place on Sunday afternoon when the undefeated and No. 2 nationally-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues travel down the road to Tait McKenzie Centre for an OUA East showdown.
