The York University Lions women's volleyball team played their second game of the weekend on Sunday afternoon as they took on the hosting RMC Paladins. The Lions would only need three sets to claim victory and bounce back from a loss the previous night.
Â
The Lions struck first and fast to open up the game. Right out of the gate the Lions would obtain their momentum and would never let up until the final point of the match. The Lions would tally 15 kills in the first set en-route to a 25-13 victory.
Heather Setka (Winnipeg) gave her contribution with an impressive seven kills in the match. Energized from a dominant opening set, the Lions would look to continue their stellar play and get back home early.
Â
The second set would prove to be no better for the Paladins as the Lions jumped out to another early lead. RMC's five kills in the set would be heavily overshadowed by the Lions' 13.
Kirsten Dillon's (Surrey, B.C.) six blocks helped to keep the doors shut on the Paladins' scoring hopes.
Sarah Williams (Oakville, Ont.) tallied nine kills to help drive the Lions to 25-13 second set victory.
Â
Entering the third set, the Lions had yet to allow the Paladins to score over thirteen points. To accomplish this for a third straight set would be an outstanding testament to the Lions ability to score fast and effectively.
Melissa Monkhouse (Guelph, Ont.) and
Celeste Witzell (Kitchener, Ont.) would combine for 21 points in the game and would help guide the Lions to a 25-12 victory. The Lions accomplished three sets of dominant play and will return home with the victory.
Â
The Lions are now tied with the Nipissing Lakers for fourth place in the OUA East Division standings with 16 points each and matching 8-9 records.
Â
The Lions' next game will take place on Friday night when the Windsor Lancers travel east to the Tait McKenzie Centre for a Friday night showdown beginning at 6pm.
