GRYPHONS STEAL VICTORY WITH LATE GOAL IN OUA FINAL REMATCH

The No. 3 nationally-ranked Guelph Gryphons stole three points on Wednesday evening with a 2-1 victory over the No. 6 York University Lions thanks to a goal in the 89th minute by Atchu Siva.

The contest was a rematch of last year's OUA final, which the Gryphons won by a final score of 3-1 after going down by a goal early. Wednesday's game played out in similar fashion as the Gryphons again came from behind to win.

After each goalkeeper made one save early, the Lions got on the board first in the 31st minute on a nice goal by Steve Kloutsouniotis, his first of the season. The home team carried its lead into the halftime break.

Just a few minutes into the second half, the Gryphons scored the equalizer when OUA scoring leader Jace Kotsopoulos fired the ball into the back of the net from just inside the box, making it 1-1.

Kotsopoulos did not stop there as 10 minutes later he had another good chance. York goalkeeper Andrew D'Souza let the ball go but almost misjudged it as it rolled just wide.

The Lions had their best chance for the go-ahead goal in the 79th minute when Cristian Cavallini brought the ball into the box and then fired a hard shot that rose as it approached the net, but Guelph goalkeeper Erik Hermanns made a tremendous save, booting the ball away.

Two minutes later the Lions had another great chance as Dylan Carreiro fired a hard shot on the run but it sailed just wide.

Both teams continued to press as time clicked down but neither could find the back of the net. It looked as though the contest was going to end in a draw, but in the 88th minute Siva scored what turned out to be the winner to hand the Lions their second loss of the season.

The Lions had two more chances to tie in injury time, on a throw in that was headed towards net but turned aside by Hermanns and then on he ensuing corner, but neither went in.

The Lions are now 1-2-0 on the season and have two losses in one regular-season for the first time since 2013. They will look to get back on track on Sunday afternoon when they welcome the Laurier Golden Hawks to Alumni Field for their first of two meetings this season. Kick-off will go at 3:15pm.
