The University of Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over the York Lions on Wednesday night thanks to a second-half goal by Hayley Howes.
The first half was uneventful as neither team was able to get much of an offensive attack going. Each team recorded three shots, but none of them were dangerous and the game remained scoreless after the first 45 minutes of action.
Early in the second half the Lions had a couple of chances back-to-back, but Guelph goalkeeper Libby Brenneman turned both aside.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 69
th minute when Howes scored her first of the season to give the Gryphons the lead.
The Lions forced Brenneman to make two more saves before the end of the game but she stood tall and preserved the cleansheet. She finished the game with five saves, while York goalkeeper
Taylor Grant made just one save.
Guelph became the first team with two wins on the season with the victory, while the Lions dropped to 0-2-1 on the season and will look for their first win on Sunday when they return to the pitch to host the Laurier Golden Hawks at Alumni Field. Kick-off is set for 1pm.
