LIONS HEAD TO WATERLOO FOR BIG MATCH-UP WITH WARRIORS

The York University Lions football team looks to get into the win column for the first time this season when they head to Waterloo, Ont., for a Week 2 match-up against the Waterloo Warriors on Monday afternoon.

Kick-off is set for 1pm at Warrior Field and the game can also be seen live online on OUA.tv.

The Lions and Warriors have been rivals in recent years as each team has undergone a rebuild in an effort to get up to the top of the OUA standings. The two squads have played some thrilling, tight contests, including an overtime victory by the Lions in 2011 and single-point wins by the Warriors in 2012 and 2014. However, the Lions have had the Warriors' number over their last two games, including a 23-14 win in Waterloo two years ago and a dominant 57-13 victory one year ago on home turf.

Monday's game is a chance for the Lions to bounce back after a tough season-opening match-up against the No. 3 nationally-ranked Western Mustangs, the highest-ranked team in the OUA. The Lions were handed another big defeat but gave up most of their points with a series of costly special teams mistakes in the second and third quarters. Despite the setback, the Mustangs are arguably the toughest team the Lions will face all season and they will look to build on the experience against future opponents.

The Warriors, meanwhile, enter their home opener on a high after winning their first game in two seasons last weekend, defeating the Windsor Lancers 54-33. The victory snapped a 16-game losing streak dating back to the finale in 2014, a win over York, an announced to the OUA that their rebuilding efforts have come a long way.

York will look for a big game from quarterback Brett Hunchak, who earned the OUA and U SPORTS offensive player of the week awards after last year's big win over the Warriors. In that game he threw for over 300 yards and had five touchdowns to three different receivers en route to finishing fourth in the OUA in passing yards and completions.

Waterloo's win last week was thanks in large part to the tremendous play of rookie brothers Tyrell and Tre Ford, playing in their first OUA games. Tyrell scored a pair of punt return touchdowns while Tre had 108 yards rushing and 50 yards passing while lining up under centre.

After Monday's big game, the Lions will return home for a Week 3 game against the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Alumni Field on Saturday, Sept. 9 beginning at 1pm.
