York University Lions fourth-year midfielder
Christina Morelli scored a much-needed goal in extra time to end Thursday evening's women's soccer match in a 2-2 draw against the McMaster Marauders. Morelli's goal came out of a handball infraction resulting in a penalty kick, wrapping up a four-goal game at Alumni Field.
The first goal of the game was scored by Marauder Maila Carboni in the 31st minute of play. The Marauders held this lead for the remainder of the first half, and continued it into the second half with a goal by midfielder Faye Stravropoulos to make it 2-0.
The Lions' first goal of the game was scored by
Ashley Nater of Pickering, Ont., in the 60
th minute of play.
This draw means the Lions remain undefeated against the Marauders, continuing a streak that began in the 2013 season.
Taylor Grant, a fifth-year goalie from Brampton, Ont., made many outstanding saves throughout the game, only letting in two of nine shots on net. McMaster's Deanna Persico made three saves out of five shots on net.
This game brought the Lions season record up to 0-3-2. The Marauders have a 0-1-4 season record.
The women take on the Laurier Golden Hawks Friday in Waterloo, Ont., and will return home to host the Brock Badgers on Sunday, Sept.17 at 1pm at Alumni Field.
