The York University Lions men's hockey team was handed a 3-1 loss by the Western Mustangs in their Saturday-night contest at Canlan Ice Sports.
The Mustangs opened the scoring at the 14:56 mark of the first period, off the stick of Kolyen Olynek. It was the only goal of the frame.
Western's lead held until late in the second, when
Stefano Pezzetta found the back of the net at 17:41 to finally get the Lions on the board and level the score at 1-1. However, Kyle Petit of the Mustangs responded just 35 seconds later, and less than two minutes before the end of the period, to again give the Mustangs a one-goal lead.
Like the first two periods, the third did not produce a goal until late, when the Mustangs' Anthony Stefano put the puck into an empty net at 19:47 to seal the win for this team.
The loss drops the Lions' record to 12-8-1 on the season and they remain in fourth place in the OUA West standings, while the Mustangs improved to 8-9-2 and are now tied with Lakehead for sixth place.
The Lions will look to get back into the win column on Friday night when they play an important game against the Ryerson Rams at Mattamy Athletic Centre. They will be back on home ice at Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday night to face the Brock Badgers at 7pm.
