LIONS FALL TO VARSITY BLUES IN STRAIGHT SETS

The York University Lions men's volleyball team faced some tough Toronto competition this weekend, falling to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in straight sets on Sunday afternoon at the Goldring Centre.

The Lions were defeated in the first set 25-17. They stepped up their game in the following two sets and saw some more positive results. The Lions had more success in the second set, finishing just four points behind at 25-22.

With the remainder of the match on the line, the Lions played with more ferocity in the third set. However, it was not enough to outpace the Varsity Blues and the set concluded 25-21. The Varsity Blues claimed the match 3-0.

Leading the scoring for the Lions was Andrew Tauhid with 10 points (eight kills, one service ace, one solo block) and Andrew Shotbolt with nine points (eight kills, one service ace). Tauhid also led the team in digs, with nine.

Nicholas Trewern and Alex Barnes racked up the bulk of the points for the Varsity Blues with 12 each. Jordan Figueira led the team in digs with nine, followed closely by Daniel Tudor with eight.

Despite seeing two losses this weekend, the Lions remain in first place in the OUA East Division with an 8-3 season record.

The Lions will travel to Windsor, Ont., for their next match on Saturday to take on the Windsor Lancers. On their way back to Toronto, they will stop in London, Ont., to take on the Western Mustangs on Sunday. The Lions will be back in action at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday, Feb. 9 at 8pm when they host the Brock Badgers.
