The York University Lions men's basketball team took on the No. 7 nationally-ranked Laurentian Voyageurs in the Lions' second home game of the weekend. Despite a huge fourth quarter effort, the Lions picked up their second loss of the weekend when they fell to the Voyageurs 89-80.
The Voyageurs sank their first basket within seconds of tip-off, but the Lions bounced back quickly to tie up the score. The Voyageurs began to creep ahead following a few defensive errors on the Lions' part and finished 11 points ahead of the Lions at 21-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lions put in extra effort in the second quarter, but the Voyageurs were able to score just enough points to maintain their lead.
Gianmarco Luciani sank two free throws to bring the Lions back within 11 points at 43-34 at the end of the quarter.
The Lions closed the gap a little in the third quarter, where the Voyageurs only concluded the quarter with a seven-point lead of 63-56.
The Lions came out strong in the final quarter, coming within two points of the Voyageurs. This narrow margin was short-lived, however, and in the few remaining minutes the Voyageurs brought back their wide lead and won the game by nine points.
The top scorer for the Lions was Luciani, who scored just over a quarter of the Lions points at 26. Just behind him was
Chevon Brown with 21 points.
Ricky Hudson had the most rebounds on the Lions' team with six.
Kadre Gray, the OUA's leading scorer, nearly had another triple-double, ultimately finishing with 23 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists.
The Lions are now 2-16 for the regular season, and the Voyageurs improve to 15-2 and sit in second place in the OUA East Division. The Lions will return to the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday, Feb. 2 at 8pm to take on the Queen's Gaels.
