The York University Lions women's volleyball team travelled to Windsor, Ont., to take on the University of Windsor Lancers Saturday afternoon and were defeated in four sets.
In the first set, the Lancers raced ahead to an early lead and had no trouble claiming it 25-17.
Things turned around for the Lions in the second set. What began as a close score soon became a huge lead for the Lions when they racked up seven consecutive points. The Lancers were unable to recover from this and the Lions ended the set with a big win, finishing 25-16 and tying the match score 1-1.
The Lancers came back with a big win of their own in the third set, defeating the Lions 25-15. This allowed the Lancers to retake the lead in the match at 2-1.
A win in the fourth set would have allowed the Lions to force a fifth set and have one last chance of winning the match. The set went into a closely fought battle but ultimately the Lions found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard, just four points behind the Lancers at 25-21.
Celeste Witzell was the Lions' big hitter in Saturday's game, earning 15.5 points (14 kills, three assisted blocks).
Sabah Kalim led the Lions in digs with 10.
Lexi Pollard earned the most points for the Lancers with 14.5 (10 kills, four service aces). Carleigh Bailey led the team in digs with 15.
The Lions fell to 7-5 in the regular season and they now sit in fourth place in the OUA East Division with seven games until playoffs. The Lancers are also fourth in the OUA West with a 5-8 mark.
On their way back to Toronto, the Lions will stop in London, Ont., to take on the Western Mustangs on Sunday. The Lions will be back at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday, Feb. 9 where they will take on the Brock Badgers. Match time is at 6pm.
