The York University Lions men's basketball team had a tough start to the second half of its season with a game against the No. 7 nationally-ranked Laurentian Voyageurs and were defeated by a score of 92-53 at Ben Avery Gymnasium in Sudbury, Ont., on Friday night.
A slow start came back to haunt the Lions as they were outscored 22-5 in the opening quarter and could not recover from there. They had a much better offensive effort in each of the final three quarters, but the dominant Voyageurs took advantage of their early lead to cruise to the victory.
Rookie
Prince Kamunga had his third straight game with at least 15 points, shooting 5-of-10 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc.
Gianmarco Luciani chipped in with 10 points, while fellow rookie
Christian D'Alessandro led the Lions with seven rebounds.
OUA scoring leader Kadre Gray, who is averaging five more points per game than any other player in the conference, continued to boost his stats with 28 points against the Lions. He also added nine rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Anthony Iacoe added 15 points off the bench and Nelson Yengue had 14.
The Lions dropped to 2-8 with the loss, while Laurentian continued its strong season and improved to 8-1 to remain in second place in the OUA East standings.
The Lions will look to get back into the win column on Saturday night when they face the Nipissing Lakers in North Bay, Ont., in a game beginning at 8pm.
