The York University men's hockey team scored three must-need goals in the third period, including two in the final minutes to tie up the game, to ultimately defeat the Guelph Gryphons 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday evening at Canlan Ice Sports.

There were a lot of chances in the first period, but neither the Lions or the Gryphons were able to capitalize. The Gryphons had two good chances in the 17
th and 18
th minute, but could not get a shot passed
Mack Shields. The Lions went on two power plays, but were unable to beat the Gryphons goalie, Andrew Masters.

The second period saw a combined seven penalties from both the Lions and Gryphons, but again neither team could get a shot passed the goaltenders.
Justin Bean and
Mark Wilson each had a chance to score a goal, firing hard shots at Masters.
Justin Maiolino had a big chance, when he intercepted a pass on the Gryphons power play to almost find the back of the net. The score stayed at 0-0 at the end of the second period.

Both teams came out with a fight, as all the goals of the game came in the third period. Guelph was able to get on the scoreboard first, with two goals in four minutes. Braydon Munn scored the first goal at 2:01 followed by a goal from Cody Tompson at 4:03. The Lions were able to respond at 9:35 when
Daniel Nikandrov assisted Maiolino who was able to find the bottom left corner on a Gryphons power play.

Connor Bramwell was able to score a goal at 18:46 to increase the Gryphons lead to 3-1. With just over a minute left in the game, the Lions impressed the home crowd scoring two goals to beat the buzzer.
Sal Filice scored at 18:58 with an assist by
Reid Jackman. The Lions pulled the goalie to add another attacker which resulted in a goal by Nikandrov assisted by Bean and
Scott Feser with only 16 seconds left in the third period to tie the game at 3-3.

The Lions competed hard in overtime, but neither team was able to find the back of the net, keeping the score tied at 3-3. The Lions were able to top the Gryphons in a seven round shootout with six saves by Shields, and a goal by
Scott Feser followed by the game winner by
Josh LaFrance.

The Lions will travel to Montreal, Que. on Oct. 19 to face the Concordia Stingers. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30pm.
