OFFENCE LEADS THE WAY FOR LIONS IN 5-1 WIN OVER WARRIORS

The York University Lions played against the Waterloo Warriors in their last home game of the regular season on Sunday and picked up a big 5-1 win. Prior to the game York recognized the Lions' graduating athletes in a pre-game ceremony.
 
The six graduating seniors included defencemen Daniel Gogarty, Josh Kiselyov and Francesco Sinopoli, midfielders Steve Kloutsouniotis and Eddie Lay and forward Cristian Cavallini. The half-a-dozen athletes were recognized by Associate Director, Athletics, Gillian McCullough, Manager, Varsity Athletics, Bart Zemanek, Carmen Isacco, Head Coach of York's Varsity soccer team as well as assistant coaches Luca Forno and Hieu Quatch.
 
The Lions victory was their 11th win of the regular season. The Warriors added one goal to their 18 goal total this season while York, conversely, was able to add five more goals on top of their 35 goals so far.
 
The first goal of the game came from midfielder Jorgo Nika, who recorded his fourth goal of the regular season. The second goal came four minutes later by graduating student Lay, which was his first of the season, with an assist by Maurizio Ragone.
 
Senior Cavallini was able to add two more goals to the score board for his seventh and eighth of the season. The first came 30th minute of the game, which was assisted by Dylan Carreiro.
 
The Warriors were able to score their first and only goal of the game with a penalty kick from Sebastian Guerrieri before the end of the first half.
 
The Lions and Warriors went into the half with the Lions leading 3-1.
 
After the half, the Lions were able to add two more goals to extend their lead. The fourth came from Cavallini, with an easy header from a free-kick. The second came on a goal from second year forward Omar Marzouk who has scored his 13th goal in 13 games, giving the Lions a 5-1 win over the Warriors.
 
Throughout the second half, some York graduating students were substituted out of the game for the last time at Alumni Field in the regular season with applauses from the audience and a standing ovation.
 
The Lions next contest will be against the Windsor Lancers on Friday, Oct.19 in Windsor, Ont.
