LIONS DEFEAT HOST WARRIORS TO ADVANCE TO OUA FINALS

The York University women's field hockey team competed early Saturday morning in Waterloo, Ont. and defeated the Waterloo Warriors 8-2 to advance to the OUA finals for the second straight year.

The Lions were able to get eights goals passed the Warriors' goalie, Marley Dowling, scoring four in the first half and four in the second. York's Chloe Walton, who scored a goal in the previous win against the Marauders, earned herself a hat trick scoring in the 10th, 40th, and 42nd minute.

Frankie St. Louis was the first to score in the 7th minute, followed by Walton, and Amber Sandhu who scored two goals in the first half. Sandhu scored her goals at the 18th and 32nd minute. The Warriors were able to get one goal before halftime, when Jennifer Mead scored a goal on a penalty corner in the 28th minute. The Lions led the Warriors 4-1 at the half.

In the second half, the goal scorers for the Lions were Walton and Claire Church who scored two goals each on the Warriors' goalie. Church scored in the 58th and 69th minute. Although the Warriors were able to score one last time in the 55th minute of the second period, with a goal by Carmen Andiel, the Lions did enough defensively and offensively to win the game.

The Lions are now off to the finals and will play the Guelph Gryphons, who defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues in the other OUA semi-final. The game went down to the wire with the Gryphons winning 2-1 in a shootout. The championship game is scheduled tomorrow at 3pm as the Lions will look to win two consecutive OUA championships.
