The York University Lions men's soccer team have advanced to the following round of the OUA playoffs after beating the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 on home turf at Alumni Field on Sunday.
Â
Although the game between York, the number one-seeded team in the OUA, and Waterloo, the sixth-seeded team in the OUA, was fast-paced, the first goal of the game didn't occur until the 25th minute after the first two shots on goal of the game by the Lions from forward
Cristian Cavallini and midfielder Emmanuel Zambazis were stopped by the Warriors
Â
It was York's star forward
Omar Marzouk who scored the first goal of the playoffs for the Lions and give the team a 1-0 lead
Â
York's offense kept up the momentum after breaking through and scoring the first goal. They continued to find scoring opportunities in the remainder of the first half and were able to get six more shots before the end of the half, three of them by midfielder
Dylan Carreiro. None of those attempts were able to find the back of the net, the Lions went into the half leading 1-0 against the Warriors.
Â
In the second half of the game, the Lions' continued to apply pressure against the Warriors and their efforts began to appear on the scoreboard. Less than 10 minutes after resuming the game, Marzouk scored his second goal of the game for the Lions, giving them a 2-nil lead in the single elimination round game.
Â
One minute later, Cavallini was sent in alone by Marzouk and scored to make the score 3-0 Together, the high scoring pair have a total of 25 goals scored this season.
Â
York's defense also contributed to the Lions' playoff success, notably defenseman
Daniel Gogarty who had a strong game on the Lions back-end as well as midfielder
Steve Kloutsouniotis who cleared one of Waterloo's scoring attempts, which could have resulted in a goal for the Warriors.
Â
York's strong defense greatly contributed to the playoff shutout as they didn't allow a shot on goal against goaltender
Mike Argyrides. The Lions move onto the OUA final four championships taking place next weekend, which will be hosted by the highest-remaining seed in the OUA East Division.
