The York University men's basketball team fought hard but were ultimately defeated by the Guelph Gryphons 105-92 on Saturday evening at Tait Mackenzie Centre.

Prince Kamunga opened the first quarter scoring a two-point jump shot for the Lions followed by a three-pointer. The rest of the quarter however was all Gryphons as they were in control for most of the opening stanza and led the Lions 31-14 by the end of the quarter.

The Lions played much better in the second quarter and were able to cut into the Gryphons lead by outscoring them 23-19 in the quarter. York's
Gene Spagnuolo nailed a three-pointer to cut Guelph's lead to 35-25 midway through the quarter, but The Gryphons were still able to finish the half leading the Lions 50-37.

In the third quarter the Lions increased their tempo and managed to cut the lead to six points.
Somto Dimanochie scored the first basket for the Lions at the start of the quarter, and
Brendon Chevannes ended the quarter with a steal and a layup. The quarter ended with the Lions trailing 71-65 against the Gryphons.

The beginning of the fourth quarter Guelph added 10 more points until Chevannes finally scored the first points for the Lions after three minutes of play. Near the end of the quarter,
Alex Thielen scored a three-pointer and a lay-up, but still trailed 9-points behind the Gryphons by a score of 81-72. The Gryphons added 34 points in the final quarter to defeat the Lions 105-92.

Leading the Lions was
Chevon Brown with 24 points and four rebounds. Fifth-year veteran, Spagnuolo earned 21 points and one rebound. Guelph's Tommy Yanchus had 28 points and three rebounds to lead the Gryphons.

The Lions will be at Tait Mackenzie Centre on Nov. 16 to face the Waterloo Warriors. The game is scheduled to start at 8pm.
