The York University Lions men's volleyball team beat the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday, Nov. 25 in a spectacularly close 3-2 win for the home team in a game that extended to five sets.
York's
Andrew Tauhid led in points between both teams, scoring a game total of 25.5 points, 25 of them being kills, while outside hitter
Andrew Shotbolt also had a phenomenal game, contributing 21.5 points and 20 kills.
The Lions beat the Blues in the first set, which went over 25 points as the home team battled for the 27-25 win. York's ability to keep a ball in the game contributed to their first set win, especially as they attempted to secure their last few points and Tauhid raced down the court as the ball was escaping the Lions and he brought it back into the game to secure another point for the Lions.
The first set saw 17 kills for the Lions and 13 for U of T.
The second set of the game, which was also close in points, saw 23 points for the Lions and 25 for the Blues. U of T's Jordan Figueira had the most digs of the set (5), which contributed to the Blues' victory. The Lions did, however, have a total of 14 kills to U of T's 10.
The Lions were then able to take the third set of the game, which saw six kills from Tauhid and four from Shotbolt. In the third set like in the first, York was once again able to chase the ball successfully as it went towards York's bench and brought the ball back to score a spectacular 14th point of the set, which ended in a 25-16 victory for the Lions.
In the fourth set, the Blues were able to fight for a comeback as the set went over 25 points for a 26-24 win for U of T. Tauhid once again led in kills between both teams (6), however, the Blues were able to snatch the last two points, which brought the game into the fifth set where the Lions beat the Varsity Blues 15-9 to bring home their third victory of the season.
Several of the Lions had a phenomenal game, including setter
Logan Mend who had 55 assists (the most between both teams), 12 digs and contributed 7 points.
Tyler Covach also had 11 points while
Grant Lynch had ten.
The Lions return in the new year for their annual Excalibur Classic, January 4-6 at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
