The York University Lions reclaimed Ontario University Athletics (OUA) supremacy and lifted the Blackwood Cup for the second consecutive year and the fifth time in the last six years after shutting down Carleton University Ravens with a 3-1 victory in the OUA Final match.
Â
York started early on as
Maurizio Ragone shot a bullet into the right lower corner of Raven Nick Jeff's goal after a lost ball in the middle of the field for a 1-0 lead. OUA first-team all-Star
Jorgo Nika increased the gap with his first goal of the night on a beautiful header to the first post from a corner kick by Dyan Carreiro to make the score 2-0 Lions.
Â
As Carleton tried to create opportunities in the rest of the first half, the Lions tucked in at the back, stopping every Raven's attempt to head into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Â
Momentum shifted in favour of Carleton starting the second half. Only five minutes into the frame, midfielder Tristan St. Pierre unleashed a rocket to the Lion's goal bottom corner to shorten the deficit to 2-1 and put Carleton back into the game.
Â
While it seemed that the Ravens were about to come with the equalizer, Nika responded with his second of the night and final goal for York, taking the Raven's defense out of balance in an orchestrated play by the Lions.
Â
"We knew Carleton's offensive play and we tried to keep our composure and defensive shape," said Nika. I had the opportunity to score two goals, but the win is the team's effort throughout the entire game."
Â
While the Lions created three chances in the first 20 minutes of the frame, Carleton continued pushing forward with 14 attempts at the Lions net in the second half, but were unable to materialize their chances and the game ended with another championship victory for the Lions.
Â
Despite the Ravens loss, Carleton will see action next week at the U-SPORTS National Championship alongside the Lions at the Point Grey Campus at UBC on November 8-11. The two best from Ontario will take on teams from the AUS, RSEQ and CanWest in an eight-team tournament for national bragging rights. The schedule and seeding for the tournament will be release over the next few days.
