LIONS WIN FIRST GAME OF SEASON AGAINST MUSTANGS

The York University women's basketball team had a huge fourth quarter and netted a 35-point victory over the Western Mustangs by a score of 77-42 on Saturday evening at Alumni Hall in London, Ont.

The entire Lions squad contributed to the massive win with every player on the roster racking up points against the Mustangs. Leading the way was Lauren Golding who earned 11 points and nine rebounds, while veteran Haley Bowie picked up 11 points and six rebounds. Similarly, Madison Bardoel had 11 points and three rebounds, and close behind was Emma Jonas with 10 points, three rebounds and two steals.

The Mustangs put up a battle in the first two quarters and stayed close behind the Lions as they led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter and 26-18 at halftime. Bowie was the first to get on the scoreboard sinking a jump shot at the start of the game and was the last to add points to the Lions' lead with a 3-point jump shot at the end of the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, the Mustangs were able to close the Lions' lead twice by one-point. After a Lions timeout, Madeline Weber scored a layup which gave the Lions back their momentum and they added ten more points including a three-pointer by Avery Bathe-Minard just before the end of the first half.

In the second half the Lions brought their game, adding 15 more points in the third quarter and a whopping 36 points in the fourth quarter. Impressively, thirty of those points came from ten three-point buckets, with Bardoel sinking three of them.

The Lions are back at home at Tait Mackenzie Centre on Nov. 9 to compete against the Algoma Thunderbirds. The game is scheduled for 6pm.
