The York University women's volleyball team impressed the crowd in the first home game of the season dominating three sets to defeat the visiting Trent Excalibur 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Tait Mackenzie Centre.
The Lions have started off their season strong and are now 3-0 on the season after previously defeating the Nipissing Lakers and the Guelph Gryphons in their first two away games.
The Lions sailed through the first set building a 16-6 lead at the midway point. The Lions continued to outplay the Excalibur and finished off the set with a final score of 25-11.
In the second set, the Excalibur put up a battle and stayed close behind as the Lions continued to lead throughout the set. The Lions earned their first point from a hit by the Excalibur that went out of bounds. The Excalibur managed to trail one point behind the Lions early in the set, however after a huge kill by
Celeste Witzell and
Cadence Currie that brought the score to 9-6, the Lions found their momentum. Trent managed to stay four points behind the Lions midway through the set with a score of 16-12, but
Kayla Clennon had the crowd cheering after a kill late in the set, followed by
Sarah Williams with a kill that finished off the set 25-18.
The Lions brought their game once again in the third set leading the Excalibur 16-8 midway through the set. To finish the final set,
Jordan Neely tipped the ball over the net and the Lions defeated the Excalibur 25-13.
Standout players for the Lions was
Chiara Da Silva with 30 assists, two kills and three digs, and Currie with 10 points, seven kills and 10 digs.
The Lions play at home again on Nov. 11 when they take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves at Tait Mackenzie Centre. The game is scheduled to start at 1pm.
