Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Sia Papadopoulos

YORK FALLS TO LAURIER IN LAST GAME UNTIL NEW YEAR

The York University men's hockey team were defeated by the Laurier Golden Hawks 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.

The Lions won their previous matchup against the Golden Hawks on Nov. 17 at home by a score of 4-3. However, the Golden Hawks had the advantage of the home crowd in this afternoon's game and outshot the Lions with 47 shots on goal compared to the Lions who had 17. The game was also highly physical, as there was a total of 28 different infractions.

The Golden Hawks were all over the Lions in the first period putting up 18 shots on goal, while the Lions had three shots on goal. Despite the Golden Hawks outshooting the Lions, neither team was able to find the back of the net. Alex Fotinos stopped all 18 shots from the Golden Hawks and kept the score at 0-0 by the end of the first period.

The Golden Hawks scored two goals in the second period and three goals in the third, which included four power play goals. They opened up the second period scoring their first goal early, only 37 seconds in with the goal by Will Cook. Cook also ended the period for the Golden Hawks with another goal at 16:21. The Golden Hawks scored three more goals in the third period by Kyle Jenkins (11:30) and two by Anthony Sorrentino (12:39, 14:12). Despite the Lions putting up seven more shots in the second and again seven shots in the third, they could not get one passed the Golden Hawks goaltender.

The Lions will be looking to break their four-game losing streak in the New Year, on Jan. 4, against the Toronto Varsity Blues at Canlan Ice Sports. Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm.
