The York University Lions women's volleyball team took on the No. 7 nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders on Sunday afternoon in home court action and fell by a score of 3-0 at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
 
The first set did not begin in the Lions' favour. The Marauders racked up five points before the Lions earned their first. Celeste Witzell gave the Lions their first point of the game, putting them onto the scoreboard, which was followed up by two service aces from Tara Leithead. The Marauders proved to be tough competition, as the first set ended 25-18 in their favour.
 
To start the second set Kayla Clennon wasted no time adding a point for the Lions. This lead was short-lived when the Lions couldn't control a ball sent their way by the Marauders. The Lions had a difficult time keeping their powerful serves in-bounds and gave up a lot of valuable points this way. However, they were able to recover and tie up the score 9-9. 
 
The Lions rallied hard to the technical time out to close this gap to 15-13. The Lions played hard through the remainder of the set to finish just behind the Marauders at 25-22.
 
The Marauders came back strong in the third set and barrelled their way ahead of the Lions. After the technical timeout, the Lions did some damage control and made some big plays. Ultimately, it was not enough and the Marauders defeated the Lions 25-16 to win the match.
 
Clennon earned the most points for the Lions at 13.5 (10 kills, one service ace, one solo block, three assisted blocks) with Witzell close behind at 12.5 (10 kills, one service ace, three assisted blocks). Cadence Currie led the team in digs with seven.
 
On the Marauders' side, Aleks Arsovic led the team in points with 12 (10 kills, one solo block, two assisted blocks). Carly Heath led the team in digs with 12.
 
This loss puts the Lions at a 7-9 season record, while the Marauders improved to 15-2 with the victory. The Lions are back in action on Friday when they host the Nipissing Lakers at 6pm at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
