LIONS FALL TO EXCALIBUR IN LAST ROAD MATCH OF THE SEASON

The York University Lions women's volleyball team travelled to Peterborough, Ont., on Sunday afternoon to take on the Trent Excalibur. Despite winning the first set, the Lions fell to the Excalibur after the fourth set 3-1.

The first set made the match look promising for the Lions when they won the set 25-20 to take a 1-0 lead overall, but things took a turn in the second set when the Excalibur won 25-21 to tie the match score 1-1.

The third set didn't prove to be much better for the Lions as it once again ended 25-21 for the Excalibur, allowing them to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, the Lions were once again unable to overcome the Excalibur, falling 25-20 to lose the match 3-1.

Leading the Lions was Heather Setka with 12 points (10 kills, four assisted blocks) followed by Celeste Witzell, who earned 11 of the Lions' points (five kills, one service ace, two solo blocks, six assisted blocks).

For the Excalibur, Austen Condie dominated the scoring with 19 points (11 kills, seven service aces, two assisted blocks). Heidi Hayes and Vanessa Aune each had 13 kills over the course of the game.

With this loss, the Lions fall to an 8-10 regular season record and continue to sit tied for fourth with the Nipissing Lakers in the OUA East Division with one game remaining. The Lions hold the tiebreaker between the two teams in the race for the final playoff spot in the division.

The Lions have one more chance to add a win in their final game of the regular season when they take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues next Sunday at 2pm. The match will take place at the Tait McKenzie Centre, where the Lions can use their home court to their advantage.
