LIONS FALL SHORT IN FIRST-ROUND PLAYOFF MATCH-UP

The York University Lions women's basketball team was eliminated from the post-season in the first round by the Ryerson Rams on Wednesday night by a score of 66-61 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The stands were filled with hundreds of Lions fans as tonight's game was part of the Subway Series, and the support paid off in the first quarter when the Lions took an early lead at 8-4, which later grew to 16-6. The quarter rounded out with the Lions still in the lead 16-10.

Things took a different direction in the second quarter, however, as the Rams made some big plays and slowly but surely closed the gap, going on to take a small lead of 31-29 by the end of the quarter.

After halftime, the Ram continued to move ahead of the Lions. The third quarter ended 50-43 for the Rams, and this soon increased to 60-51 halfway through the fourth quarter.

Perhaps it was the support of their fans that gave the Lions the energy needed to close the gap in the final five minutes of play. Lindsay Shotbolt added two jump shots while Katrina Collins-Samuels added two three-pointers to bump the Lions to 64-61 with less than a minute remaining on the clock.

Sadly, the Lions couldn't keep the Rams from scoring. The Rams added another two points after Collins-Samuels' three-pointer to force the loss.

Leading the Lions in points were Megan MacLeod with 13 points and Haley Bowie with 12. Shotbolt led the Lions in rebounds with nine and added eight points in the final game of her varsity career.

For the Rams, the bulk of the scoring was done by Marin Scotten, who contributed 18 points. Sofia Paska led the team in rebounds with 18.

The loss puts an end to the Lions' season, while the Rams have advanced to the OUA quarter-finals and will travel to Ottawa this weekend to face the No. 1 nationally-ranked and undefeated Carleton Ravens on Saturday.
