The York University Lions women's hockey team took on the second-place Western Mustangs on Saturday evening and faced a tough loss, falling to the Mustangs 3-0 at Canlan Ice Sports.
The competition proved to be tough for both sides, as neither were able to score early. The Lions thought they had opened the scoring, but
Christina Chin's tally was overturned when a Lions' penalty occurred on the same play.
The first goal of the game came in the second period from Western's Alyssa Chiarello, assisted by Emma Pearson and Evra Levesque. The Mustangs led 1-0 at the end of the period.
The Mustangs added two more goals in the third period, both on an empty Lions' net. The first goal came from Shailyn Waites, assisted by Levesque. Less than a minute late, the Mustangs added their third and final goal, this time from Levesque, who was assisted by Waites and Edie Levesque.
The Lions continue to hold onto 11
th place as they fall to a 6-0-12-3 season record. The Mustangs, meanwhile, have a 13-2-5-2 record and hold down second place by one point over the third-place Guelph Gryphons.
The Lions will head to London, Ont., for a rematch with the Mustangs on Friday. The Lions will be back at Canlan for their final home game of the regular season on Friday, Feb. 16, where they will take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at 7pm.
