The York University women's volleyball team traveled to Thunder Bay, Ont., on Saturday to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves and were defeated by a 3-1 score.
The match did not start well for the Lions as they fell to the Thunderwolves 25-19 in the first set.
The Lions came very close to overtaking the Thunderwolves in the second set but fell by just two points for a final set score of 25-23.
The Lions came back to win the third 25-19, which brought the match score up to 2-1, but they could not hang on to this momentum and were defeated in the following set 25-18 and lost the match 3-1.
Heather Setka had a big game and was the Lions' leading scorer with 15.5 points over the four sets (12 kills, two service aces, three assisted blocks).
Celeste Witzell added another 13 points to the Lions' score (11 kills, one solo block, two assisted blocks).
Cadence Currie earned the most digs for the Lions at 18, and
Melissa Smilie finished with 16.
On the Thunderwolves' side, Leah Mousseau earned 18.5 points for her team (17 kills, one service ace, one assisted block). Rheanna Geisel contributed 17 points (13 kills, three services aces, two assisted blocks). Ciara Zarn led the team in digs with a whopping 30.
The Lions have a 7-7 record with five games remaining in the regular season and sit in fourth place in the OUA East Division. The Thunderwolves play in the OUA West and sit at the bottom of the standings at 4-12.
The Lions will be looking to add some more wins to help secure a spot in the playoffs when they return to home court next Friday to take on the Brock Badgers at 6pm. On Sunday, they will be back at the Tait McKenzie Centre to take on the McMaster Marauders at 2pm.
