YORK SPORT COUNCIL HOSTS SPORT CLINICS FOR LOCAL SCHOOLCHILDREN

The York University Sport Council hosted its annual Shoreham Sport Clinics last week, giving local schoolchildren the opportunity to play with and be mentored by Lions varsity student-athletes.

The Shoreham Sport Clinic is a program designed for children at Shoreham Public School in grades 2-5. The majority of the children in the program are chosen by their teachers or at the request of their parents and are children who at times exhibit behavioural challenges. During the lunch hour, athletes eat with the students and then lead the students through drills and games for a specific sport.

The program was led by York Sport Council president Tracey Edwards, a five-year member of the Lions track and field team, and included varsity athletes from a number of different teams. Lions varsity student-athletes from basketball, football, rugby, track and field and volleyball all took time out of their busy schedules last week to spend time with the children.

The aim of the program this year is to promote teamwork among the students, through group drills and relays incorporating the skills learned during the session. Students will be asked to cheer on each other and help their peers through different exercises and drills.
