York University Lions receiver
Colton Hunchak was named the West most valuable player at the 2018 U SPORTS Valero East-West Bowl as his team came from behind to win 15-14 on Saturday at Laval's TELUS-UL Stadium.
Manitoba Bison running back Jamel Lyles scored the game-winning touchdown from 18 yards out with 2:12 remaining on the clock to erase a 12-0 deficit. Hunchak had two crucial catches of 18 and nine yards in the final drive of the late-game comeback to earn the MVP award. He finished with three catches for 38 yards to tie for the team lead in both receptions and receiving yards.
"It was great to play with all these guys and learn all week long," said Hunchak. "Being surrounded by all these good players all week has allowed me to be better today and for the future. I will now focus on the off-season to improve even further and be able to help my team."
Lions teammate
Nikola Kalinic also had a strong game for the West squad, picking up two catches for 17 yards as well as one special teams tackle. Hunchak's older brother,
Brett Hunchak, was the starting quarterback for the East team and went 4-of-12 for 28 yards.
It was the third straight victory for the West team and improved their record to 10-6 in the annual Canadian Football League (CFL) top prospects game since the event began in 2003.
