The York University women's soccer team won their first game of the 2018 season against the Windsor Lancers with a massive 3-1 win at Alumni Field.
Â
After a slow start to the game, York Lions'
Christina Morelli provided some action for the spectators when she crossed the ball in front of Windsor's net at the 23-minute mark but was deflected by a Windsor defender who kicked the ball wide.
Â
Windsor used that momentum for their own gain at the 36-minute mark when Lancers forward Kaitlyn Austin scored the first goal of the game to put the Lancers ahead of the Lions 1-0.
Â
The Lions however, did not let out and answered the Lancers' pressure with only four minutes remaining in the first half. Â Third-year York Lions forward
Sia Papadopoulos scored the first goal for the Lions, tying the game at one.
Â
The Lions continued to add goals on the scoreboard into the second half of a very tightly matched game. At the 58-minute mark, Papadopoulos scored her second goal of the game from within the box to put the Lions ahead of the Lancers 2-1.
Â
The Lancers had a chance to redeem themselves with ten minutes left in the second half, but Lions defender
Teni Odetoyinbo made a nice defensive play on a Windsor shot to keep the Lions in the lead.
Â
The Lions kept the pressure against the Lancers and furthered their lead when Morelli's penalty shot in the 86th minute put the home squad up to two goals, securing the victory. The Lions finished their second game with an impressive 3-1 win against the Windsor Lancers, giving them their first win of the preseason.
Â
The Lions will attempt to win their second game of 2018 when they play the Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday, August 29th at the Alumni Field at 6pm.
