The York University Lions football team will have a big test ahead them during the long weekend when they travel to Guelph, Ont., for a Week 2 matchup against the Guelph Gryphons.
Kick-off is set for 1pm at Alumni Stadium and the game can also be seen live online on OUA.tv.
The Lions will be in tough against the Gryphons, who enter Week 2 ranked as the eighth-best team in the country. The Gryphons, who were the Yates Cup champions in 2015, have had the Lions number in recent years winning their most recent matchup in 2016 by a score of 52-8. York's last victory over Guelph came in the 2005 season when they won at home by score of 22-15.
The Labour Day matchup will be a chance for the Lions to bounce back after a tough Week 1 loss to the Queen's Gaels. The Lions came out of the gates strong against the Gaels and led for most of the first-half, before giving up late touchdown in the second quarter to head into half-time down 17-12. The Gaels lead was still at five points heading into the fourth quarter, but they turned up their offense and scored 22 points in the final quarter to seal the victory. Despite the loss, the Lions took away some positives heading into Week 2, including outgaining Queen's in total yards and outplaying them for the better part of the first three quarters.
On the other side of the field, the Gryphons will also be looking to bounce back from a tough Week 1 loss. Guelph dropped their season opener on the road to the McMaster Marauders by a score of 16-15. The defensive battle saw Guelph lead for most of the game before a McMaster touchdown at 8:53 of the fourth quarter put the Marauders ahead for good. With a packed crowd expected at Alumni Stadium, the Gryphons will no doubt be looking to rebound in their home opener against the Lions.
There will also be some history on the line on Monday, as both Brett and
Colton Hunchak are approaching York school records that could be broken against the Gryphons. Brett is just four completions shy of breaking the York record for most career completions and 123 yards away from setting the career mark for passing yards. Colton meanwhile is ten receptions away from breaking the all-time mark for receptions in a Lions uniform. Both Hunchak brothers had big Week 1 games against Queen's and will be looking to pace the offense against the formidable Gryphons defence.
Guelph struggled offensively last week against the Marauders, netting only 241 yards in total offense, but were impressive defensively holding the seventh ranked team in the country to 16 points. The Gryphons finished fourth overall in the OUA in both points per game (36.6) and points allowed (24.5) last season.
Following the Monday game, the Lions will have a quick turnaround for Week 3, as they will return home for a Friday night Frosh Fest game against the Windsor Lancers on Sept. 7. The action starts at 6pm at Alumni Field.
