The York men's soccer team took on the Laurier Golden Hawks for the second straight game and came out with almost the same result as they won 3-0 in front of York's engaging Frosh Frenzy crowd. The Lions beat the Laurier on the road in their last game by a score of 4-0.
Â
Prior to kick-off, the 2017 Lions' men soccer team, who won the OUA championships last season, were recognized in a pre-game ceremony and former athletes
Jonathan Lao, DeVante Walker,
Andrew D'Souza, and Joey Cichillo all returned for the occasion and watched as the 2017 OUA championships banner was revealed above the press box before the game.
Â
Like the women's soccer team in the first game of the night, the men opened the scoring and took an early lead. At the 8-minute mark of the game, York's
Cristian Cavallini scored the first goal of the game with a header into the right side of the net on a nice crossing pass by
Steve Kloutsouniotis. Nine minutes later, York's
Omar Marzouk scored the second goal of the game with another assist from Kloutsouniotis on a bouncing ball that hopped over Laurier goaltender Jeffrey Omoregie-Sanni Â
Â
Forward
Omar Marzouk scored his second goal of the game in the 30th minute to make the score 3-0. The remaining minutes of the first half were dominated with three more shots from York and none from Laurier.
Â
The second half of the game did not see any goals from either side, however, the Lions offense fired six more shots at the Laurier goal. The crowd was as engaged on the bleachers as the Lions were on the field, as a packed house was into the game until the final whistle. The Lions managed to keep the pressure against the Hawks until the 90
th minute of the game.
Â
York goalkeeper
Michael Costanzo who was substituted with goalkeeper
Mike Argyrides in the second half had three saves in the second half as the duo combined for the shut out. The Hawks almost scored their first goal at the 84
th minute, but Costanzo saved a shot from close range, and made another save in the 90
th minute to preserve the 3-0 victory.
Â
The Lions play against the McMaster Marauders on Friday, September 7 in Hamilton, Ont. at 8pm. They play their next three games on the road.
