LIONS BOUNCE BACK AGAINST LAURIER, SCORE 1-0 WIN IN FROSH FRENZY GAME

The York University Lions women's soccer team redeemed themselves against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday, September 6th at Alumni Field during the annual Frosh Frenzy game. In front of a packed house where all of York's colleges enthusiastically cheered on the Lions, they won 1-0 against the Golden Hawks, bouncing back their 2-1 loss against Laurier last week.

The Lions kept the pressure against the Hawks throughout the first half of the game. They provided most of the scoring chances in the first half with ten shots, which greatly outweighed Laurier who fired three at the Lions net.

York midfielder, Farkhunda Muhtaj almost scored the first goal of the game, with a chance in front of the net in the first half. The first half also saw good tries from forward Sia Papadopolous, whose shot hit the left corner of the net and midfielder Kalifornia Mitchell, but they were unable to break through with the opening goal.

The first and the only goal of the game came from Jessica Lush, who scored straight down the middle late in the first half, securing the lead for the Lions on her first goal of the season, as the Lions led the game 1-0 going into halftime.

During the second half, York centre back Teni Odetoyinbo stood out with many outstanding defensive plays on Laurier attackers, shutting down many of Laurier's offensive chances.

The Lions kept their defense strong throughout the second half of the game as they controlled the play and also made the most electrifying saves in net when necessary. York goalkeeper Tamara Orlando had three saves during the second half, keeping the Golden Hawks scoreless and picked up the 1-0 clean sheet victory.

The Lions play their next three games on the road, with the first coming tomorrow against the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton, Ont. at 6pm.
