LATE GOAL SINKS LIONS AS THEY LOSE 2-1 TO MUSTANGS

The York University Lions men's hockey team lost 2-1 against the Western Mustangs on Saturday, Jan 12 in London, Ont.

The Mustangs, who had 13 shots in the first period of the game, were off to a great start as they secured their first goal at 17:49 of the game. Western's Spencer Cobbold was able to get a goal past York's Mack Shields with an assist from his teammate Kyle Petit.

Two minutes later, the Lions were able to respond to the Mustangs' lead by closing it with a goal of their own. York's Jeremy Lucchini, with assists from Stefano Pezzetta and Josh LaFrance, scored the first goal of his Lions career. York had seven shots in the first period as the Lions and the Mustangs finished the first period tied 1-1.

In the second period of the game neither the Lions nor the Mustangs were able to score a goal against one another, though they were fairly even on shots-on-goal. Shields was able to save all ten of Western's shots and Western's goaltender Luke Peressini was able to save all nine of York's shots, which continued their 1-1 tie following the second period.

It was in the third and final period of the game where the Mustangs secured their win against the visiting Lions. Within the last minute of play of the game, 19:05, Western's Cordell James scored an unassisted goal on York's net to give the Mustangs their 2-1 game win against the Lions.

The Lions will be able to try to redeem themselves against the Mustangs as they take on Western on home ice at Canlan Ice Sports on Friday, Jan 18.
