LIONS END UP ON WRONG END OF HIGH SCORING GAME, FALL 7-6 TO RAMS

On Saturday, Jan. 19, the York University Lions men's hockey team lost 7-6 against the Ryerson Rams in a high scoring game during York's first away Subway Series game of the year at the Mattamy Athletic Center.

In the first period of the game, the Rams were able to get on the scoreboard with a goal with just over a minute to spare at 18:45 to give Ryerson the first goal of the game. The Rams' offense provided the home team with 16 shots on goal and all but one was saved by York goaltender Mack Shields. The Lions, on their end, were able to get six shots on goal during the first period but none were able to find the back of Ryerson's net.

In the second period of the game, the Lions outscored the Rams with three goals in the second, while the Rams were able to score two goals. The first goal of the period was once again scored by Ryerson. The Rams' Connor Schlichting scored the goal at 5:04 with assists from Steven Harland and David Miller. The Lions responded three minutes later with a goal from York's Reid Jackman and assists from Daniel Nikandrov and Scott Feser. Jackman was then able to score another goal at 14:19 with an assist from Nick Zottl during a power play to give the Lions a 2-2 tie with the Rams.

Ryerson then responded two minutes later with a goal by Mathew Santos to lead 3-2, then with 17 seconds left in the second period, York's Daniel Nikandrov scored the last goal of the period with assists from Jackman and Nik Coric to send the teams into the second intermission 3-3.

The third period saw seven total goals and Ryerson ended up on the right side of the action-packed game. Eighteen seconds into the period, Ryerson scored their fourth goal of the game on a snipe by Cavin Leth, which was quickly answered by York's Feser, who previously had an assist, who scored at 1:14 into the third period. Ryerson then responded with two goals in a row by Patrick Fellows and Jesse Barwell to bring the score to 6-4 for the Rams at 9:32.

York's Jackman then scored his third goal of the game and 13th of the season. His goal was then responded by Ryerson's Jared Walsh, bringing the score to 7-5 for the Rams. The Lions were able to score one more goal during the game at 15:48 from Coric, however, it was not enough to give the Lions the win they were looking for against their cross-town opponents.

Despite the loss, the Lions netminder Shields had 41 saves throughout the game while Ryerson's goaltender Troy Timpano had 25.

The Lions return to Canlan Ice Sports for their next game on Friday, Jan. 25 to play against the Waterloo Warriors. Puck drop is at 7pm.
