LIONS LOSE TWO-POINT GAME TO VOYAGEURS

The York University men's basketball team fell by two-points, 79-77 against the Laurentian Voyageurs in an action-packed game on Friday afternoon at Tait Mackenzie Centre.

The Lions, who are now 5-12 on the season competed against the Voyageurs who improved to 9-8 with the win. The Lions got out to an early lead which they held for the majority of the game, until the Voyageurs clawed back in the fourth quarter and won the game in a controversial ending where the shot clock buzzer went off with three seconds left, leading to confusion on the court between both teams.

DeAandrae Pierre opened the game nailing a three-pointer to give the Lions an early lead. After four minutes of play, the Voyageurs were still unable to get a point on the board. The Lions picked up an 11-point lead, 15-4 with two minutes remaining. First year guard, Tyler Pryce, made a lay-up to end the quarter with the Lions leading 20-8.

Nana Adu-Poku made a jump shot adding two more points for the Lions at the start of the second quarter. Adu-Poku continued to add consecutive points, even nailing a three-pointer as the Lions led 29-15. Prince Kamunga also sunk a three-pointer and earned the foul, exciting the crowd. Midway through the quarter, the Lions continued their large lead on the Voyageurs by a score of 36-17. Despite the Voyageurs attempting to close the lead, the Lions finished the half leading 41-29.

Laurentian had a strong start in the third quarter adding 7 points, but still trailing 41-36. The Lions added their first two points of the quarter after five minutes of play. The Voyageurs picked up their first lead of the game, 45-43, with a lay-up by Kadre Gray. However, the Lions were quick to reclaim their lead 46-45. Despite the back and forth action, the Lions held on to their lead ending the quarter 58-52.

Six minutes into the fourth quarter, the Voyageurs were trailing just one-point behind the Lions, 63-62. The close fourth quarter saw multiple lead exchanges as the intensity increased from both teams. Gene Spagnuolo and Pierre both sunk a three-pointer to tie the game 75-75 with two minutes remaining. Laurentian made two free throws and led the Lions 77-75, however Adu-Poku made a lay-up with 17 seconds left to tie the game. The game ended with Laurentian player Haroun Mohammed picking up a loose ball with two seconds left in the game after a missed three-point attempt by Gray, and scoring the game-winning basket after everyone else on both teams thought the game had ended with the sound of the shot clock buzzer.

Spagnuolo earned 18 points, three rebounds, and three steals, while Chevon Brown has 15 points, three rebounds, and three steals for the Lions. Leading the way for Laurentian was Kadre Gray who had 32 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
