The York University men's volleyball team competed against the Waterloo Warriors and after five sets were defeated 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Physical Activities Complex.
The Lions entered the match with a 4-5 record on the season, while the Warriors had a 3-6 record. With the loss, the Lions are still in fourth place, two points ahead of the Nipissing Lakers, in the OUA East Standings.
A tough battle, and back and forth momentum throughout the match led the Lions and Warriors to take the game to five sets. In the first set, the score was tied a total of 20 times. With the score tied 23-23, it was
Tyler Covach serving for the Lions that led to two attack errors by the Warriors, allowing the Lions win a tough set 25-23.
In the second set, the Warriors picked up a large lead on the Lions after five consecutive points brought the score to 20-12. Despite the Lions adding five more points, the Warriors took the set 25-17. The Warriors tied the game 1-1.
In the first half of the third set, the Warriors continued to lead the Lions and entered the midway break with a 16-11 lead. The Lions came back from the 5-point deficit and eventually tied the set 21-21. After a serve by
Logan Mend, and an attack error by the Warriors, the Lions picked up their first lead 22-21. The Lions and Warriors tied the set another six times. With the score tied at 29-29, a kill by
Andrew Tauhid and an attack error by the Warriors led the Lions to win the set 31-29.
In a close fourth set, the Lions and Warriors yet again had the score tied multiple times. With the set tied at 18-18, the Warriors earned three points on a service and attack errors to lead the Lions 21-18. Despite one last kill by
Grant Lynch and Covach, the Warriors won the set 25-20. The Warriors tied the game again, 2-2.
The Warriors earned five points in the final set before the Lions earned a point of their own after a kill by Tauhid. The Warriors led the Lions throughout the set and took the game 3-2 after winning the deciding set 15-7.
Tauhid led the Lions with 17.5 points, 17 kills, and three digs.
Aleksander Grzegorczyk earned 12 points, seven kills, and two digs, while Mend had 36 assists, and 11 digs. Waterloo's Nolan Spencer earned 18 points, 15 kills and 6 digs.
The Lions are set to play next week, Feb. 2 against the RMC Paladins at Tait Mackenzie Centre. The game is scheduled to start at 3pm.
