Over the weekend the York University Lions field hockey team remained undefeated in their away games against the Queen's Gaels with a score of 3-1, and a tie against the Waterloo Warriors 1-1.
Their performance this weekend placed the Lions in third place in their division.
In the first game, the Lions faced off against the Gaels in a dominating fashion. In the first quarter, the Lions scored early, midfielder
Amira Brar scored an unassisted goal in the first four minutes of the game. The Lions played fantastic defence for the rest of the quarter. They prevented the Gaels from getting on the scoreboard — resulting in a 1-0 lead for the Lions.
In the second quarter, unfortunately, the Lions defence faltered, and the Gaels were able to get an unassisted goal late from Mairead Corrigan, resulting in a tie game.
The third quarter was intense, with neither team scoring. The score was at a stalemate of 1-1.
In the fourth quarter, the Lions turned up the intensity and strived to break the tie, and they did so successfully scoring back to back goals. In the 8th minute of the fourth midfielder
Natalie Winter scored an unassisted goal, followed by Brar's second goal of the game in the 12th minute. The Lions defence prevented the Gaels from answering back, ending the game with a score of 3-1 for Lions.
In the Lions second game, they faced off against the Warriors and expected to add another game to their win column.
The game remained goalless in the first and second quarter thanks to the fantastic defence preventing the Warriors from getting any shots on net, resulting in a 0-0 draw in the first half.
Fortunately for the Lions, the Warriors defence started to falter, and the Lions scored first in the 4th minute of the third from midfielder
Michelle Lee, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead over the Warriors.
Just when the Lions thought they added a game to their win-streak, the Warriors came back in the final minutes of the game from forward, Taylor Goodhue ending the game with a tie of 1-1.
The Lions will now advance to the OUA quarter-finals and face-off against the Western Mustangs in the hunt for a third straight OUA Championship banner on Saturday at Varsity Field in Guelph, Ont.
