The No. 2 nationally ranked York University Lions men's soccer team takes on the McMaster Marauders as they begin their quest for a third straight OUA banner.
Â
The quarter-final match-up will take place at Alumni Field and is scheduled for Sunday at 6pm on OUA.tv.
Â
The two teams met twice in the regular season in two highly-contested matches, with the Lions prevailing at home in the first game 1-0, but ultimately tying on the road 0-0. In what is always a challenging match-up, the last two times these squads met in the postseason were the 2014 U SPORTS championship final and 2015 OUA championship game where the Lions came away with both wins 1-0, and 2-1 respectively.
Â
The Lions are coming off their 50
th game unbeaten against all OUA opponents, a record that includes two back-to-back flawless playoff trips leading to OUA banners. With an 11-0-3 record on the season, the Lions will be the top seed out of the OUA West Division for the 13
th year in a row. A big reason behind their stellar record has been a solid back line with starting keeper
Mike Argyrides in net – he leads the league with 12 shutouts and only five goals against in 14 games played.
Â
The Marauders come into this quarter-final match after narrowly escaping an upset against the fifth-seeded Western Mustangs with a 4-2 penalty decision in their favour. Wednesday's first-round match needed more than 120 minutes to decide a winner after six goals, two red cards and eight yellow cards. Closing out the regular season with an impressive 5-1 win over the third-seeded Brock Badgers, the Marauders ended the year with a 5-3-6 record, giving them the fourth seed in the division. Displaying an aggressive lineup year-round, McMaster has picked up 27 yellow cards this season, the fourth most in the OUA.
Â
Heading into his first postseason with the Lions is
Merci Yuma, the team's leading scorer who tied for fourth in the OUA with eight goals. The rookie went on a run finding the back of the net in five straight games and has scored the game-winning goal for his side three times. On the defensive end, 2018 OUA first-team all-star
Josh Kiselyov can be found at left back. His long throw-ins have often been confused for corner kicks and have proven deadly when thrown into the 18-yard box.
Â
McMaster's leading scorer, Dusan Kovacevic, replicated his total from last year with seven goals on the season. In net, the Marauders will look to 2018 OUA second-team all-star Tristan Joyce.
Â
The winner of Sunday night's match will secure their spot in the OUA Final Four. As the top seed out of the OUA West, York would earn hosting rights with a win and face-off against the lower seed out of the East. If McMaster pulls off an upset, their location and opponent in the Final Four would depend on results around the league.
