LIONS FALL TO MUSTANGS ON THE ROAD IN LONDON

The York University Lions men's hockey team faced a disappointing defeat at the hands of the Western Mustangs on Saturday with a final score of 6-2 at Thompson Arena in London, Ont.

In the first period, the Lions came out roaring with the primary goal in the first five minutes of the game. Defenceman Justin Bean scored with the help of his teammates Nik Coric and Brendan Browne.

At 13:49 of the game, the Mustangs answered back with a goal of their own from Sean Montgomery with Franco Sproviero and Carson Moniz for the assists. Quickly the Lions wanted to regain control in the period and ended it with a goal just 20 seconds later from Benjamin Evanish with another assist from Browne ending the first period with the Lions leading 2-1.

Midway through the second period, the Mustangs tied the game with a goal from Moniz and assisted by Anthony Stefano. Unfortunately for the Lions, the Mustangs were able to score a powerplay goal a short time later, breaking the tie from Stephen Desrocher assisted by Kenny Huether and Kyle Petit.

The Lions struggled to get a goal on board but held the Mustangs at bay until the middle of the third period, when the Mustangs got another goal on the board, an unassisted tally by Desrocher.

In a last-minute attempt, the Lions pulled goalie Mack Shields to get an extra player in the Mustangs end but the Mustangs were able to score two empty-netters, the first from Sproviero assisted from Ethan Szypula at 13:39 and the second from Huether assisted from Stefano and Rylan Bechtel at 14:43.

The Lions dropped to 2-4-1 with the loss, while the Mustangs are now 2-3-1 after the win.

The Lions will be playing the Nipissing Lakers on Friday at home at 7pm, where they will be hungry for a win to snap their mini losing streak.
