LIONS BEAT GRYPHONS IN OVERTIME TO ADVANCE TO OUA FINAL FOUR

The No. 10 nationally ranked York University Lions women's soccer team beat the Guelph Gryphons 1-0  in overtime on Sunday during the their OUA quarter-final game, securing their ticket to the OUA Final Four for the first time in four years.

The intense match needed 120 minutes to decide a winner, and 105 minutes to score a goal. It was at that moment Lions midfielder Jotam Chouhan was able to score with a shot about 40-yards away from the Gryphon's net.

Chouhan's goal was able to secure York's ticket into the final four, the first time they were able to get to this point in the last four years.

The intensity of the game was accompanied by the late October wind which influenced much of the ball's movement throughout the match.

In the first half of the game the teams were equal in shots on goal, both registering two. Neither side was able to find the back of the other's net.

The Lions and Gryphons went into the half tied nil-nil.

In the second half of the game, the Lions vamped up their offense with double the scoring attempts than they had in the first. Attempts were made by Marissa Castellano, which was saved by Gryphon's keeper Brooke Davidson; York's Catherine Umolac took a shot that went high above the net, and York's Farkhunda Muhtaj and Kalifornia Mitchell were both unable to get a goal in.

The Lions who have successfully advanced to the next round will be playing the Final Four host No. 2 nationally ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday. The time has not yet been confirmed.
